IRET Foundation, managing body of the Bologna-Ozzano Technopole and leader of the project “Mat2rep – MULTIFUNCTIONAL BIOMATERIALS FOR THE SELF-REPAIR OF TISSUES AND ORGANS”, financed by the European funds of the Emilia-Romagna Region, POR FESR 2014-2020 and subsequently with resources from the FSC Development and Cohesion Fund 2014-2020, participated in the drafting of a new scientific publication in an international journal concerning possible new therapies and cures for spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury is characterized by a cascade of events leading to sensory and motor impairments. To date, this condition is irreversible and there is no cure. To enhance lesion repair and limit secondary degeneration, the project team collaborated in the development of a multitherapy based on nanomedicines loaded with the promyelinating agent triiodothyronine T3 (thyroid hormone), used in combination with an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) and a neuroprotector (Nerve Growth Factor) administered systemically. The derived product was tested for pharmacological properties and efficacy with in vitro and in vivo systems.
