Prevention of Alzheimer like-disease in Down Syndrome

Alzheimer dementia is devastating disease, which progressively leads to a complete loss of cognitive abilities.

Actually there are no cures, they are no clear the molecular, cellular and systemic events that generate manifestation of clinical symptoms; for these reasons it is really difficult to propose hypotheses for the development of causal therapies, to identify risk factors and prevention strategies.

There are some conditions that it is certain the onset of the disease as in Down syndrome.

The tripling of chromosome 21 leads to the accumulation of proteins (including Amyloid Precursor Protein) that may play a primary role in the development of the pathology.

Fondazione IRET is studying the preventive strategies about  develop of Alzheimer’s disease in Down syndrome, starting from what is known about early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and the possible role of triplication of chromosome 21 genes.

Multiple Sclerosis: Remyelinate to protect

The multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disease usually begins in young ages, and affects the myelinic sheath of the nervous system nervous system.

It doesn’t modify the life span, however, sometimes it plays an important role in the quality of life.

The research, as well as looking for the causes of diseases to develop therapies, is committed to developing knowledge and solutions to modify the history of the disease by increasing the quality of life of patients.

For many years Fondazione IRET has been working on the development of therapies that can help the rapid and efficient repair of myelin, in order to improve the patient’s motor and sensitive performance and to protect the quality of brain aging.

Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease very disabling, slow but progressive evolution and with an important impact on quality of life. It involves, mainly, some motor functions and  it is characterized  by

resting tremor, slowness of movement, muscle rigidity and balance disorders

Although pharmacological treatment, surgery and multidisciplinary management can provide relief for symptoms, there is still no cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Recent scientific data in the field of brain transmission, molecular biology and genetics have opened interesting perspectives for understanding the causes of the disease.

For many years Fondazione IRET has been studied the possible molecular mechanisms of pathology with particular reference to neuronal communication, in order to develop new therapies that can stop / slow the course of the disease and / or improve the quality of life of patients.
