The IRET Foundation is a scientific research institution in the biomedical field, dedicated to the study of degenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s dementia, vascular dementia, ataxia, Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain.
Fondazione IRET works to improve the quality of life of patients through a process of cutting-edge research. Nowadays in neurodegenerative diseases therapies can be administered after the onset of symptoms and only in a few cases they are able to modify the natural history of the disease.
Therefore the research plays the most important role: without knowledge it is impossible to have prevention and develop treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Research carried out aims to identify innovative strategies to fight against the progression of these pathologies, to repair the damage and to identify the causes for prevention of their onset.
IRET Foundation is part of the Bologna TechnoHub of the HighTech Regional Network and its laboratory, which is located in Ozzano dell’Emilia, is dedicated to Rita Levi Montalcini (1986 Nobel Prize in medicine).
The name IRET indicates the 32nd Egyptian Dean, one of the 36 shares in which the Egyptians subdivided the sky. IRET means “eye”, in particular “eye of knowledge”.
